Pouring Concrete at Landmark Venue in Urban Environment

One of our recent projects involved crafting a solid base for a new statue at a prestigious venue in the heart of Dallas.

Precision Under Pressure

The challenge of this project didn’t come from the size of the project, but rather the time constraints and work environment. We needed to pour a base for a statute within the bustling environment of one of Dallas’s most iconic landmarks. The nature of this project imposed a stringent deadline. It had to be done right and on time.

Keeping it Safe

There was a lot of foot traffic around the job site, so keeping pedestrians safe was essential. We erected chain link safety fencing around the perimeter with a blue visual barrier to prevent the public from entering the construction site. 

Keeping it Beautiful

We also had to protect existing finished surfaces from being damaged during construction. There was a perimeter wall with glass, marble, and a metal handrail that we boxed in with OSB. We covered the OSB with heavy-duty plastic and secured it firmly to ensure no water, wet sand, or concrete would damage the perimeter wall.

Step by Step to Successful Completion

The following is a quick breakdown of the project:

• Preparation and Demolition: We started by removing an existing concrete slab and area drain to make room for the new statue.
• Excavation: Next, we excavated the area to prepare for the statue’s foundation and slab, ensuring everything was set for a solid base.
• Backfill and Foundation Installation: We supplied and installed the necessary backfill material below the slab and around the statue foundation, providing the needed support and stability.
• Concrete Installation: Our team handled all aspects of the concrete work for the statue’s foundation and the surrounding planter area. This included forming, reinforcing, and pouring the concrete according to the project specifications.
• Granite Cladding: We installed a granite cladding support angle to an existing concrete wall, coordinating closely with the mason to ensure precision and quality.
• Drainage Solutions: The project also involved installing subdrainage and a trench drain system to manage water efficiently, including modifications to an existing drain pipe to ensure seamless integration.
• Details and Finishing Touches: We paid close attention to the details, including foam spacers, pads, isolation joints, chamfers, and the specified finishes and slopes on the concrete slabs. Support accessories and reinforcing materials were used as needed to maintain the integrity and aesthetic of the structure.
• Caulking and Sealing: To ensure durability and weather resistance, we provided all necessary concrete caulking.
• Daily Cleanup: Maintaining a clean and safe work environment was a priority. Our team ensured the work area was cleaned and trash removed daily, reflecting our commitment to professionalism and respect for the site.
